Fighting The Feelings Of Depression

Learning how to overcome depression is not an easy process. When you are depressed, you cannot just snap yourself back together… regardless of what anyone says. Depression hurts everyone around you; it hurts your very soul. You feel worthless and helpless. Nothing makes you smile. But take note: in order to overcome depression, you have to understand how it works.
Depression Hurts Because It Affects Your Subconscious Mind
Depression goes beyond grief. When you have grief, you can purge your pain through crying and other strategies. The pain is still there, but it is not the focal point of your life. With depression, there are no set strategies for relieving the sour feelings. In fact, some people feel so blah they are unable to cry. The most they can do is sleep, which is why some depressed people sleep 10 hours or more each day.
Now the reason for all this lies within the mind. Chemical imbalances prevent the subconscious mind from functioning properly. This is not to say that the depressed person has problems with thinking. However, they do have trouble responding to certain stimuli. For example, most people feel a little bit of happiness when they see a baby smile. They think the scene is cute, which initiates a brief, yet joyous response. The depressed person may consciously believe that the baby is cute, but subconsciously they are unable to feel any emotion.
How to Overcome Depression Once and For All
Before you can overcome depression, you need to get an official diagnosis from a psychiatrist. In some cases what appears to be depression is really a case of grief or extreme sadness. In these situations, behavioral strategies can be used to help alleviate the pain. But if you are suffering a chemical imbalance, you will need psychiatric drugs or anti-depressants to fix the problem.
