Did you know that the Tahitian pearl is not actually farmed or harvested in Tahiti? That may be why the Tahitian pearl pendant is so valued and sought after. And when compared to a Tahitian pearl necklace, much more reasonable in price.
Tahitian pearls are farmed, grown and harvested in the many lagoons and coves in what is now called French Polynesia. The pearl is grown in a black lipped oyster named Pinctada margaritifera-cumingi – a mouthful no matter how you look at it.
Often called the Tahitian black pearl, this is in fact a redundant misnomer. Usually the pearls are not black! They are known as black pearls because they generally have a darker look to them, a darker hue. But these pearls can have various overtones and undertones ranging from a dark green to pink with almost every color in between. And you can see them in various combinations as well.
Tahitian pearls also come in a whole variety of sizes and shapes. You can find one to fit almost any piece of jewelry you could want. They are versatile with an absolutely brilliant mix of color that give them an allure, a sense of the mystery we long for.
Tahitian pearls have been the prized possession of kings and nobility and celebrities alike. They all want to be seen wearing a stylish and stunning piece of Tahitian pearl jewelry.
Tahitian pearls are farmed by removing them from the water, placing a small piece of foreign object on the inside of them and placing them back in the water to do their thing – growing a pearl. This is a long term project taking two years or more before the pearl is ready to be harvested. And the oysters are only good for eight to ten harvests before they die of old age.
While being used in many different settings, we have yet to see them in mens wedding rings although that wouldn’t surprise me given how flamboyant and creative certain celebrities are.
