Pictures always help because they give visual confirmation to a somewhat ambiguous and mind oriented subject.  Use pictures and graphics to illustrate what exactly the problem is and how he or she can solve it.  If the student can actually see what he or she is doing, then they will feel more confident in being able to find the right answer.
