With the advent of information technology, the present generation has been extremely computer and internet savvy. Internet and telephone connections are a part of almost all middle and high-class homes. However it is not always that people do the required planning before hand about the number of network equipments they would be using in the future, while setting up a network and doing the required wall work for the same.
This is where an ethernet splitter also termed as rj45 splitter comes into use. A common scenario could be the requirement of network connection for your new gaming device along with that for the computer which is already network connected. Even though the Ethernet cable could be bought and used to connect the new device. This is generally a messy and bad idea and would sometime require wall work as well. So instead of the Ethernet cable, ethernet splitter can be used. Note that only one 2 connections are possible per ethernet cable.
Rj45 splitters should always be used in pairs. At the router end the ethernet splitter actually combines signal from 2 router ports and feeds it to the ethernet cable. At the user end this is split back into two ports thus suitable for two network devices. It is also important to choose the right type of rj45 splitter suiting your needs i.e. two data ports which are used in computer applications or two voice ports which are used for telephonic applications or one of each data and voice ports. Each of these ethernet splitters has different internal connections.
So finally some important points:
- A single ethernet splitter may not be of use to you unless you are planning on some experiment on the same! So always buy it in pairs.
- An ethernet splitter would cost around 10 – 12$ per piece.
- The connection details would be found in the manual provided along with the ethernet splitter. Make sure you connect it properly.
